You have been tasked with arranging a corporate hospitality day. Few would envy you. The challenge of coming up with something new, that suits a wide variety of people, and also won’t blow your entire events budget for the next decade, is not an easy one.
Corporate entertaining is clearly something that intimidates a lot of us, hence the fact that wooing the boss is such a popular theme in sitcoms and novels (the entire run of 70s and 80s sitcom Terry and June seems to have been about impressing The Board). More recently, there’s a lovely bit in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets where Uncle Vernon’s attempts to impress a potential client are spectacularly sabotaged by Dobby the House Elf.
Even in the real world, entertaining a potential new business partner or client can be intimidating. How do you get the balance right, between making them feel happily spoilt, and painfully trying too hard? We’ve come up with some suggestions of how The Cornwall can help you get your corporate hospitality right, and ensure that there are no “Dobbys” in the mix…
The relaxing day
These days, to the relief of many, CEOs are not like the grumpy, bridge-playing Sir Dennis in 80’s sitcom, Terry and June, so some time spent in our wonderful Clearing Spa could be just the thing.
We offer a range of treatment and pamper packages, and can create a bespoke day especially for your party. You could even combine a day membership for the Spa with a session with our tennis coach. The Juice Bar is a great place for lunch, and we can arrange a special menu just for you.
For a sport with a difference, how about croquet on the lawn, complete with Pimm’s or cream tea? If you have a sneaky suspicion that The Board may be a bit on the Sir Dennis side, this could be the perfect option…
The adrenaline day
A session involving a (safe) element of danger is always a popular choice for a corporate hospitality event. Just down the road from The Cornwall is the excellent Porthpean Outdoor Education Centre, packed with lots of fun; we can help you create a day to remember.
It would be a shame not to make the most of the fantastic Cornish coast; and the Centre can arrange coasteering, kayaking, canoeing, sailing, body boarding or snorkelling for all levels and abilities. Dry land pursuits, such as archery and climbing are also available.
The foodie day
For a different take on the corporate dining theme, Philleigh Way Cookery School on the Fal Estuary offers some wonderful foodie experiences.
Based on the beautiful family farm, the friendly team at Philleigh offers a wide range of courses in the rustic yet state-of-the art kitchens, recently converted from old farm buildings. Bread making, shellfish, foraging and game themed courses are some of the fascinating days on offer. They also offer a bushcraft day, involving shelter building, navigation and a campfire lunch in the farm’s old oak woodland. (It’s bushcraft-lite though – come back to us afterwards for a comfortable indoor bed!)
The Philleigh Way team are happy to create a bespoke day for corporate groups. Themes, such as “Cornwall in a Day”, are popular with “upcountry” groups, and they also offer half-day sessions.
The eco day
As ever, our near-neighbour The Eden Project delivers, with a great range of corporate ideas. You can even host your event inside one of the biomes. They can arrange activities from skating to den building, or you can simply make use of their excellent meeting facilities and locally-sourced food.
We can arrange cycle hire from local company Pentewan Valley Cycle Hire, to keep the green theme going throughout your day. We’ll be here, ready with a cold drink and a comfortable bed, as you puff /ride triumphantly back up our drive!
The wining and dining day
Sometimes, all it needs to run a successful corporate hospitality event is excellent food, convivial conversation, and a comfortable bed to collapse in at the end of the day.
Our Elephant Bar & Brasserie can cater for business parties of all sizes and boast an excellent space for those all-important informal conversations.
For accommodation, there is a range of contemporary rooms in The Woodland Hotel, or for something a bit different, try our luxurious self-catering houses on The Estate. Your guests will definitely feel welcome and well looked after.
So you see, responsibility for your corporate hospitality day does not have to be a poisoned chalice. The Cornwall is a great base for a variety of activities, and we can work with you to come up with a day that really suits your clients. In the end, what pleases us the most? It’s not about how much has been spent, or how showy the event is, but that your needs and interests have been thought about and catered for to create an interesting and enjoyable day, where everyone involved feels happy and engaged – now that’s impressive.
