Spring update from Kevin Barredell of The Cornwall Hotel & Estate
The first flush of spring flowers is out and for some, such as snowdrops, it is already nearly over. Mid-season daffodils now dominate in the gardens but look out for primulas, early aubrietia and around the grounds of course, primroses and celandines.
Our pair of Buzzards have been busy keeping out interlopers including last year’s chick who they have nurtured through the Winter but is now firmly shown the door as they get down to serious nest building.
The greater spotted woodpecker is the loudest drummer of our native species and can be heard most mornings among the sweet chestnut above the hotel.
Which tree will burst into bud first? Well the race is on and it is a contest between Sycamore, Willow and Elder. The last is technically a shrub but I like a three horse race.
My flower of the week is the daffodil and the picture is of an established planting in the grounds.
