It’s all too easy to hibernate at this time of year. Let’s all just give in to cocoa, crumpets, and costume drama. But, fair-weather fitness is no good for anyone – and certainly won’t help you feel fabulous and healthy in the hectic run-up to Christmas.
At The Clearing Spa there are some great ways to keep fit all year round. Here are some different ways to work out this winter.
In the colder months, the gym is a very inviting place for a workout. Our fitness suite has some fantastic Technogym equipment – perfect to keep you feeling fit on a dark, wintery evening, especially as each cardio station has its own entertainment system. The gym is housed in the former eighteenth-century stables, and you can still make out the structure of the original stalls.
To make the most of the gym, we offer personal training. An hour’s one-to-one session starts at just £30, so it’s a great investment to keep your fitness programme on track, or simply to pick up some tips.
The Great Outdoors does not close down in November! The Cornwall’s estate gives you the opportunity to get fit outdoors this winter, without being too far away from the comforts of a hot shower and a roaring fire.
The parkland is a great place for a run or a walk; and we can recommend trails across the estate that give the best and most varied views. Boot Camp classes are weather-dependent (we’re not that harsh), so please contact The Spa to find out more.
Tennis coach Pete Churchill is always keen to emphasise that tennis is for life, not just for Wimbledon week! The tennis courts are open all year, and coaching is available for players of all ages and abilities (please pre-book). You won’t feel the cold for long.
In the water
Swimming combines a great cardio workout with complete body toning. It’s a fantastic form of exercise for people of all levels of fitness, and as the water supports the swimmer, there’s less stress to the body.
And there’s the beautiful mindfulness of swimming. Being in the water seems to keep the soul, as well as the body, healthy. If nothing else, swimming lengths is a great chance to mentally write the Christmas lists/plan that presentation/learn to count in Spanish!
The pool at The Clearing Spa has wonderful views across the estate, and we even open the doors on warm days to create a lovely indoor/outdoor pool. Follow your swim by relaxing in the whirlpool, steam room or sauna; and then there are the super-refreshing drench showers to look forward to… For an excellent low-impact work-out, Petra runs two Aquafit classes a week.
If you’re staying with us, membership of The Clearing Spa comes as part of the package. We also have specific spa breaks, for those who would like a weekend of holistic health and relaxation.
If you’re not a guest but would like to join the Spa, individual memberships start at just £53 per month. There’s a range of options and levels to suit your fitness requirements, including memberships for couples and under 16s. We also run corporate schemes (go on, persuade the boss – a healthy workforce is a more productive one etc etc etc!). Have a look at our Membership page for more details.
No excuses – there are plenty of ways to keep fit and active this winter. (And just think – you’ve earned yourself a lovely meal in The Arboretum, or post-exercise drink in The Parkland Terrace!)
